Among the most famous plant endemics are the Pyramidal Bellflower, Dalmatian Pyrethrum, and Croatia’s national flower, the Iris, strictly protected by law. Among the animal inhabitants, the Olm stands out as the most unique and fascinating resident of the Krka River.
Šibenik – City of History, Culture and Innovation
If someone tells you there is a town in Croatia that got the first public street lighting in the world, you might be surprised to learn that Šibenik actually holds this title! In 1895, Šibenik became the first city in the world to have street lighting powered by alternating current (AC). Nikola Tesla played a key role in the development of this technology, and this event marked a historic moment as Šibenik became a pioneer in using AC for public street lighting.
Šibenik is also home to Homo Volans, the Flying Man. Based on a sketch by Leonardo da Vinci, Faust Vrančić made a more detailed design of a parachute called Homo Volans and built the earliest known version of the parachute.
Another highlight of Šibenik is the Cathedral of St. James, known for its stunning reliefs on the facade that depict biblical scenes and figures, including St. James. These, along with numerous other sculptures, contribute to the cathedral’s grandeur.
